The term "combat knife" was not officially used in the German armed forces; the term "field knife" was more common there, as it was designed more as a multi-purpose knife for everyday tasks and less as a melee weapon (i.e., for stabbing and cutting in close combat). The term "combat knife" is therefore mainly used outside the armed forces, especially since the introduction of the KM 2000, which officially bears this designation in its name.
